By the time you read this, we might already be hiking.

It’s the eve before we start hiking El Camino, something we’ve been plotting and planning since August. It seems surreal. I’m not sure either of us really knows what to expect, and that’s part of it.

The grotto in Lourdes, France, where Bernadette saw the Virgin Mary.

The last week has been interesting to say the least. We came to Lourdes, France purely because it is Eric’s Mom’s namesake. Lourdes, France is an incredibly important place in the Catholic religion, and it is said, that this is where the Virgin Mary appeared before Bernadette. Although we are not religious, we wanted to honor Eric’s Mom here on the one year anniversary of her death, May 2nd.

Lourdes also happens to be a place where some journey to in conjunction with El Camino. In fact, this is the place that inspired Martin Sheen to hike El Camino and was the impetus for the film The Way.

When we were deciding on where to start the hike from, we figured it would be an important part of our journey to hike from Lourdes, France to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, at which point, we will begin to make our way across a portion of the Pyrenees and into Spain. (Yes, we might be slightly crazy.)

Neither one of us has ever done anything like this. But once we found out about the pilgrimage in 2010, we couldn’t stop thinking about it. We both feel like it is something we need to do before we get married this October. So that’s partly how we ended up here.

This will be a journey full of self-discovery, growth, making peace with the past, letting go, and strengthening our relationships with ourselves and each other.

Because this journey is a personal one for each of us, although we are making the trek together, we’ve decided to journal our experiences daily online. BUT we won’t be reading what the other one writes AT ALL until we finish almost two months from now. The only person who will know the full truth, is you! We’ve already started writing, and you’ll be able to read everything starting on May 12th when our Love On El Camino site goes live. To get the posts sent directly to your inbox, so you don’t miss out on any of the juicy happenings of the trail, sign up here. (And if you know me personally, you might know that I can be a bit of a drama queen, so you know this should be interesting.)

Come back and visit us on Thursday to find out why we are are raising money for The Passport Party Project along The Way.
